Adapting to Change

Dear Friend,

This is a message to say a big thank you to everyone in the village for the support we have received since re-opening The Great House.

We have been overwhelmed by the level of support we have received from local people, and I can report, our little hotel has also been busy welcoming customers from the North, Midland, and West Country, all enjoying what Lovely Lavenham and the surrounding countryside has to offer.

You will have heard from the media that one of the biggest challenges our industry is currently facing, after having re-opened, is an acute staff shortage following COVID and the impact of Brexit. The other challenge we now face is the cost of food which is on the rise daily.

We have managed to retain the same value for money and our prices have been held for the present, however, our biggest challenge is the staff shortage we are experiencing.

We have vacancies for front of house and in the kitchen, simply because some of our staff did not qualify for settlement status and therefore, returned to their own country.

There are catering vacancies advertised all over the country that are remaining unfulfilled. Some catering businesses have had to take extraordinary steps, for example, one of London trendiest two Michelin-starred restaurants, Le Gavroche, remains closed every lunch and only opens for service five evenings a week.

We want to continue to deliver a high-quality service, therefore, we are not focused on how many covers will we do but are focused on delivering fresh, local quality food, cooked with passion, experience, and knowledge.

Our meat is procured from our local Lavenham butchers, whilst our seafood now comes from the Suffolk coast fishermen – you could not have it more local than this.

This is our promise and in order to keep our promise, to deliver great local food, we will for the current time, propose a Three-course Set Menu with a choice at lunch, and a Five-course Experience Dinner for the evening, from July.

This menu will change daily to ensure every dish and ingredient is fresh.

If you are vegan or vegetarian we will be able to care for your needs, if you have any allergies, please be assured we will also be pleased to accommodate, and even if there is something that you do not like, we will always do our best to satisfy your palette. As always, the table is yours for the duration of lunchtime or for the whole evening.

I want to thank you on behalf of everyone here at The Great House for your support and to reassure you that despite the high challenge we have ahead of us, The Great House will deliver outstanding quality food. We may be one of the smallest, but we will remain the best.
