Here we are shackled again facing a complete lockdown which began on Thursday 5th November with the close of business.
Was it completely unexpected? The answer is no given the high level of infection throughout the country, but it is certainly a blow to The Great House business and many other businesses in our industry and beyond.
The industry has gone through a very lean time over the past couple of years and The Great House has not been immune to it as we have seen a reduction in our level of customers.
Since reopening, both the wonderful support from our local community and the positive effect of a staycation, have helped to see a revival in our accommodation capacity and our restaurant trade.
We were on the way up and looking forward to a good November where bookings were positive. Instead, we are now back to square one, having to close the business and lose the good work we have done up to Wednesday 2nd December, all being well.
My personal opinion is, given the level of infections, the Government had no option, however critical comments are suggesting, had this been tackled earlier it could by now, be a lesser evil.
I had to rip up the letter I had intended to send you as it talked about our upcoming good times, like our Beaujolais Nouveau Day, Christmas and the extraordinary Autumn Experience Menu our Head Chef, Swann, and his team had designed and soon to be available instead, all have been cancelled.
All we can hope for is to be here for you during December, with a lovely experience of dining, in what we believe, is one of the best restaurants in the area.
We hope Christmas 2020 will still happen and it will be a good time of celebration, although restricted and certainly not what we have known in the past.
As a closing note, the whole of The Great House team want to thank you for all the support you have given us over the past few months, we really appreciate you having helped us to survive.
We also hope you will keep safe and that it will not be too long before we see you again.
I will send you another letter in December detailing our Christmas events but please keep safe and fit, and please come back to see us when we reopen.
With all my personal best wishes,
Dr DA Tropeano OBE
